Defying Fate is a Science Fiction story for Epic Fantasy Adventure readers looking for something fresh and different. There are no dragons here; no magic swords, demons, vampires or zombies—but there is a naive prince, some damsels, a few swordsmen, are a couple of ancient androids, one of which is a dog.
In this lighthearted science fiction parody of epic fantasy adventures, Prince Donald of Westgrove discovers that the true nature of the WMD (Warden of Mystic Defiance) is not the threat his father, the king, believes it to be. With the assistance of his cynical guide, a goodhearted bodyguard, a beautiful messenger, and the aforesaid androids, he must thwart the plans of his father’s powerful chief advisor and prevent three nations from going to war.
Defying Fate pokes good-natured fun at the serious tone and dependence on magic common to many epic fantasy adventure novels. Often insightful and frequently funny, it is sure to appeal to readers of these genres looking for something familiar and yet completely different.

This edition is a exclusive, which contains the full text of the separately published award-winning novel The Warden Threat and its sequel, The Warden War.

Defying Fate - Two Tales of the Warden: by DL Morrese
Sci-fi and fantasy have never sat well in my opinion, I love both Genres, but not together. I’ve never seen the need or wanted to read any. This book proved my wrong, I really enjoyed reading it and ate up every word with gusto. Aliens, princes, Dwarves and Elves make up a great tale of intrigue and suspense. I reality, it’s fantasy, pure and simple, think, The Hobbit etc.
For standard fantasy lovers, the lack of battles, fight scenes or any wars might put you off, but the intrigue and comedy well makes up for this. The sci-fi elements of the book are well hidden and work well, no great intergalactic battles or threats. The main character, Prince Donald, grows as a character and becomes a man, whilst trying to put a stop to a war before it begins.
A few minor criticisms are, the reveal of the ‘Bad guy’ too early, and the end was a more a little bit of a let-down.
Overall a great fantasy read, more for you readers than adults.
Well worth five stars.

Defying Fate Two Tales of the Warden A SciFi CounterFantasy Novel eBook DL Morrese Reviews

An excellent story teller that brings all the bright and shiny embarrassment of a good adventure to the reader with plenty of reality thrown in to keep it believable. I enjoyed this book very much and I wish we could have more from this author.
I thought it was an excellent book! I read it straight through and enjoyed it very much!
This somewhat quirky, somewhat light sci-fi/fantasy story was just what I was looking for. The characters were interesting and believable, and it made for a really fun, well-written, well-edited book. Have to say that I just hate the cover and if I had seen it before buying the book I probably wouldn't have gotten it. I could so picture our hero doing his 'resurrection dance'. There were some loose ends that I would enjoy seeing tied up and I hope there is another book to follow.
This review is for the edition ebook.

Not your normal fantasy, but not your normal science fiction either.

A good science fiction story that parodies most fantasy. Magic does exist, sort of, but the antics of the prince will keep you laughing. Will there be a war between the two countries? Will the evil advisor with so much power be the victor in the battle of wits? You will need to read the book to find out.

The antics of the prince are great in this story. It made me laugh, and kept me laughing through most of the first book. The tone of the second book becomes more serious, since the countries are planning to go to war over a statue that may or may not come to life. The counter-fantasy method used by the author will cause some to curse in horror, but most of us will see a wonderful story that will let you a laugh at the world of fantasy today.

DL Morrese does a wonderful job writing a parody of fantasy and magic. He has managed to mix many elements into something really fun to read, yet give room for the reader to think about the characters and their lives. It will give you a laugh, and let you know that not all magic is magic.

I recommend this book to readers of fantasy looking for something different. It is also good for those tired of serious fantasy who would like a break from the magic, demons, dragons, and heroes so prevalent in most stories. If you read fantasy stories, and are wondering if there is something different, grab this one. I am looking forward to reading the third book in this series.
Donald is the 3rd son of the King of Westgrove, a largely agricultural kingdom with a strong military. Their neighbor, mineral-rich Gotrox, specializes in mining and crafting of metals. They also have a strong military and a giant, mysterious statue.

When the King learns, through his trusted adviser Horace Barter, that Gotrox is planning to magically animate the statue and go to war with his nation of Westgrove, the fun begins. Westgrove starts arming for war, and Gotrox, in return, starts ramping up its military.

Donald, our young, rather naive prince has dreams of becoming a hero, like the heroes in the stories he reads. So, he sets off, with a Ranger, Kwestor, assigned my his father to keep him safe, to take control of the statue himself. He has a LOT to learn and his stumbling attempts to be a hero becomes a "school of hard knocks". His first mistake is to attack Muce, a soldier of fortune who is trying to do a starving family a favor. After Donald recovers, Muce joins their quest. Along the way, they add "Grandpa" Nash, an oldster of indeterminate age and much wisdom, and Trixie, an attractive messenger.

You can tell from the names that the author has his tongue planted in his cheek (well, a little bit). The story has enough humor mixed with seriousness to make a well-balanced and very enjoyable story. Some of the traveling interludes run a bit long, but so did the trips themselves, what with the dominant pack animal being verrrry slow.

The story is complete (one of my personal hot buttons) yet allows for more tales told in the same world. This is a combination of two books, The Warden Threat and the Warden War. There's also another book called An Android Dog's Tale (it looks like it could be told in an earlier time on the planet?) Hopefully we'll see more of Donald and his band of adventurers.
